I’ve recently become really interested in Camera Girls after researching into women in pornography and prostitution last year. The more I researched into them looking for empowerment, the more I was let down in realising that women will always be at risk of getting hurt, even with laws and measurements in place. With camera girls, it would be almost impossible to get physically abused. However, could virtual abuse be just as damaging? I’ll be looking into this thoroughly within the next few weeks, as well as using it for my next art pieces. I’ll be searching for how the world of Camera Girls works, perhaps putting myself in the more PG side of it, such as the fetish of eating a large bulk of food fully clothed and see its reaction. Will I encounter abuse? Revenge porn has been a common topic too, and I’ll be interested if being a Camera Girl perhaps eliminates this risk because you’ve consented to your body being in the public eye, thus not making you a target to be used. Or does it perhaps make you more susceptible to the crime? I’ll also want to learn about their currency, how they make money, and if they are asked what to do or if they are in complete control of what they do on Camera.

Trisha Paytas made a name for herself on Youtube and social media by being a Camera Girl
“Everything about this odd fad is unhealthy, from the way men pay to watch women, to how it encourages binge-eating, ‘fat talk’ and an increased obsession with women’s bodies. Already this week we’ve seen a debate about Girls’Lena Dunham being airbrushed in Vogue, even though she is known for being naturally curvy. Feminist website Jezebel announced they would pay $10,000 for the original photos – which were later sent to them.”
“It is encouraging that organisations are fighting back against women’s bodies being retouched, but at the same time, it shows how worryingly fascinated we are by fat/not fat women. Meok-Bang is just another example of this. At first glance it might just look like a new weird sexual fetish, but actually it is one that objectifies women and encourages binge-eating.”
